It changed my view of God from a thunderbolt thrower to a God who is always caring for me. It also made me want to be God’s hands here on earth spreading word of God’s Providence and way of charity, justice and love.

Let’s abide in being Sisters of Providence and Providence Associates during the coming year and cultivate the union among us by:
So loving our neighbor that we foster community and communion wherever we go.
So showing mercy that we engender hope wherever we go.
So doing justice that our actions and advocacy lead to change and reduce the violence and hatred in our world.
The world does need us for this. And what a sweet and powerful Providence that would be.

I find strength in the passages written by Mother Theodore that are oft quoted and perhaps even more so in the lesser-known stories of her day-to-day life. She walked the grounds of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and cared so much for the fledgling school, its students and the teachers. I believe that her prayers are still with us and perhaps with me in a special way because I now watch over the school that she created.

The core values of Global Mamas (and Fair Trade, in general) are consistent with the core values enumerated by the Sisters of Providence, namely:
• Focusing on the common good (Love);
• Working to alleviate the suffering of others in some direct way (Mercy);
• Endeavoring to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all (Justice);
• Using Earth’s resources in a sustainable manner (Care for Creation); and
• Working together for the good of the whole (Community).
I don’t know that I have profound ideas about “thin times” as much as I have great curiosity and now new terminology to describe moments when it seems the veil is most sheer between the living and those who have passed. Between two hearts who hear each other’s song. For those times when the divine shines through the eyes of those in our midst and pierces the heart.
