About Sister Dawn Tomaszewski

Sister Dawn brings years of experience in advancement work, specifically communications, public relations and marketing. Prior to serving in elected leadership with the Congregation, she most recently was the vice president for advancement at Guerin College Prep High School in River Grove, Ill. Prior to that, she was the director of communications, public relations and marketing for the Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago. She was the president of the founding board of Woods Daycare Preschool, Inc., and also has served on the Alumnae Board of Saint Mary-of-the Woods College and the Fatima Retreat House Board in Indianapolis. Sister Dawn holds master’s degrees in both journalism (from the University of Chapel Hill, N.C.) and theology (from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago). She is currently general superior of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

What is your relationship to the Sisters of Providence?

Was taught by the Sisters of Providence in both high school (Mother Theodore Guerin H.S., River Grove, IL) and college (Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College). After joining the SPs in 1975, I spent the first six years teaching in Sister of Providence high schools. After completing a master's degree in communications in 1984, I returned to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and became the director of communications for the congregation. I helped joined the departments of communications and development into the congregation's advancement office and was the first director of congregational advancement.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to walk the Woods; I love photography; I love to sing and do often as a cantor and a member of the schola at liturgies at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

What are your hobbies?

Gardening! Sports of all sorts, especially watching college basketball games during March madness, or golfing, especially with my brother and his family.

What is your favorite Bible verse/quote/book/movie/song/YouTube video (and why)?

Scripture: from Deuteronomy: "Choose life then, that you and your descendants may live." Song: from Wicked: "For Good." I love the Harry Potter series of books and have read Volume I at least four times.

What is your favorite month (and why)?

February, of course, the month I was born!

If you could have dinner with three famous people, dead or alive, who would you invite (and why)?

Of course, I would love to meet Mother Theodore Guerin. In this realm, I would love to meet Barbra Streisand, but it would make me too nervous to eat dinner with her. I have always been fascinated by Abraham Lincoln.
