Sister Margaret Kelly (formerly Sister Bernard Maureen)

...in life was the Chicago Providence Women (CPW). Margaret became its coordinator in 2002 and they were called the Associates until our present day Associates came into being. They took the name of CPW and they met monthly with a speaker and time for prayer. Margaret worked very hard to help to coordinate speakers with a variety of justice related backgrounds, and the friendships that developed from these meetings have been very important in her life and in the lives...

Women marching as a sign of hope

Shortly after the election of Donald Trump to the office of United States President, Sister Barbara Battista saw a post on Facebook about a march of women in Washington the day after the inauguration and decided that she wanted to attend. A busload of marchers from Terre Haute, including Sisters of Providence, Providence Associates and others, prepare to leave for Washington, D.C., last night. Why she and others are marching “I want to say, ‘Here we are, the whole rainbow...

We’re Surrounded!

...every Eucharistic Liturgy here at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, at the time of the general intercessions, we hear read aloud the names of the sisters and associates whose anniversary of death was on that date. We also are reminded to recall family members or friends who have run the race and kept the faith. They become my circle for the day. (And, as I get older, I recognize many of the names!) They are indeed, so great a cloud of witnesses. Examples...

‘What will happen to us if that comet falls out of the sky?’

...resurrection beat out its rhythmic change in our own spirits. Let us live with the faith and awareness that all of life is beloved of God. Happy Easter! Note: Thanks to Providence Associate Bill Hughes of St. Stephen Episcopal Church who helped us access the Sacred Ground Program. It was developed by Katrina Browne. Bill has been assisted by Sister Barbara Battista, SP, and Providence Associate Chuck Fisher. Special thanks to Providence Associates Debbie Dillow and Jennifer Drake, who have...

Celebrating Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

...Oct. 25, 1998, which I was blessed to attend. What a joyful event! I also was able to attend her Canonization on Oct. 15, 2006. What an amazing experience to celebrate both events and share it with the sisters, alumni and friends of the Woods. I had visited Saint Mary-of-the-Woods many times before becoming a Providence Associate in November 2017. After visiting with the sisters and associates for many years, Providence finally gave me the nudge to become an associate....

Celebrating 8th Day Center for Justice

(Note: The following blog was re-printed with permission from Global Sisters Report) Many Sisters of Providence and Providence Associates recently celebrated 8th Day Center for Justice, located in Chicago. I can still see where we were sitting — Sister Kathleen Desautels across from me at the big dining room table as light streamed into the convent at Maternity BVM in Chicago’s Humboldt Park. It was the second day of my first ministry visit as a postulant in 2014, and I...

Simbang Gabi the Terre Haute way!

...The Terre Haute celebration My experience of Simbang Gabi at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Terre Haute, Indiana, was very similar; but also unique. It’s the Terre Haute way! I was happy to share the festive tradition with Sisters of Providence and Providence Associates. Sisters Marsha Speth, Jan Craven, Paula Damiano, Joni Luna, Emily TeKolste and Sister Gill Quigley from the Sisters of Providence in England all joined me. Providence Associates Zenaida Contreras and Amy Miranda were also there with their...
