Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the first ministry of the Sisters of Providence, founded by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her companion sisters just months after they arrived in the United States in 1840. A vibrant college community located at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, the Sisters continue to sponsor the college.

'There is no place like Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.'

'I enjoy (volunteering) because I felt like I was helping the sisters out and making a difference.'

'Happiness is something to be practiced like a violin.'

Saint Mother Theodore, pray for us

'Receiving this award is indeed both a great honor and a privilege for me personally.'

We wanted to share some of Sister Mary Theodosia’s poems with you.

Sister Barbara Doherty has been a lamp, a lifeboat and a ladder in my life at various times throughout the years. When I received the news that she had been anointed on July 25, I started to write down some of my most treasured memories of Barbara.

Well, the fact that we are still here 179 years later is certainly testimony to the Providence of God. It is also testimony to all those sisters in the U.S. as well as in China and Taiwan AND to the many other Dotties, Mandys and Margies in our larger community of Providence who have not let appearances keep them from doing good, doing lots of good.

'Give me, give us, this heart of Mother Theodore with which to treasure the power and promise of the cross.'

One morning, I said hello to a Sister of Providence resident, merely as a greeting. As I started to leave, she asked me to stay.

This Memorial Day, I hope you will remember some hero or heroine of your own, an obscure apostle, perhaps.

That seed has blossomed into a new outreach ministry for the Sisters of Providence. We will now receive for interment at the Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, the cremains of persons other than members of the Congregation.
