Some places can overwhelm us with their deep spiritual “footprints.” Some places seem more touched by God than others. I was in one of these places recently. A visit to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods provoked a poetic response: There are places God has glanced with lightest touch of hand, some swept, palm to earth, and some in which God’s hand sinks into soil like a sculptor’s hand in clay, that shout, “Here I’ve sent saints; look the proof is all around you.”...

C elebrating common ground. Affirming existing collaboration. Exploring future possibilities. These were some goals as members of the Board of Trustees of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Mission Advisory Board of the Sisters of Providence met together for the first-ever collaboration retreat March 4 in the College library. The idea evolved from conversations between Sister Dawn Tomaszewski, SP general superior, and Dr. Dottie King, 16th president of SMWC. Both see how important it is for the Congregation and College to...

Rod Marino came to entertain the sisters in March and was happy to see his 8th grade teacher, Sister Terese Marie Havlik, for the first time in nearly 50 years. Rod Marino, “the Casual Crooner,” traveled from Chicago to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to entertain Sisters of Providence and friends at the end of March. He and his wife Diana performed in the Providence Dining Room and in Providence Health Care. Rod also called upon his sister, Providence Associate Mel Marino Wolff,...

“…be assured that in leaving the past to the mercy of God and the future to [God’s] Providence you will derive from your offering very great peace and very great consolation.” I wonder what Saint Mother Theodore Guerin had to say about joy? About worry? About hope? What was that Saint Mother Theodore quote about not doing all the good but only what we can do? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a searchable database with all of our...

In 2005, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis approached religious congregations who had served in the Archdiocese to come to the table to discuss the possibility of sponsoring a Cristo Rey school. One by one, the congregations declined, noting that they did not have either the funds or personnel to make it happen. The Leadership Team of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods felt likewise. Yet they also sensed a strong call to do as Saint Mother Theodore had done some...

This National Catholic Sisters Week, the Sisters of Providence are thankful for students and staff at St. Paul Catholic School in Valparaiso, Indiana. Fourth graders at St. Paul School in Valparaiso, Indiana, shown here with their teacher Kathy (Finley) Olson, back center, were just one of the many classes to create cards and send donations to the Sisters of Providence. “I don’t think I would be the woman I am today if I hadn’t had the experience I did with the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.” Kathy (Finley) Olson teaches fourth grade at St. Paul School in Valparaiso, Indiana. She graduated...

Sister Mary Edwin Werner (second from right) with members of her family, including (from left) brother Chet, and her father Edwin and mother Elizabeth. There is something special about going over to the Archives Department to obtain sister information for Throwback Thursday blogs. And we’d like to personally thank Elizabeth Kolar for suggesting this week’s sister. Elizabeth emailed us asking about a possible Throwback Thursday blog on Sister Mary Edwin Werner. In the email, she said “For many years, she...

Amid the many and varied pictures of family Christmas gatherings currently posted on Facebook, this question, “What is your word for 2019,” has been making an appearance. Susannah Conway, author and photographer, has actually created a test to help you determine your word. She developed this in place of making a New Year’s Resolution, which she says has never really worked for her (or for anyone for that matter)! “Choosing a word as a guiding light for the new year...
