Sisters donate paver for Veterans project

Not too long ago, Sister Donna heard the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors (THAAR) and many others had started working on an area in Terre Haute to construct six tiny homes for veterans in need.

The project came to life in August 2024 with a groundbreaking ceremony. Volunteers were needed for the construction of the homes as well as a park next to the homes. In addition, donations to cover costs were needed.

That’s when Sister Donna knew she wanted the Congregation to get involved

“I became aware that this was going to happen,” Sister Donna said. “And they were selling pavers to fund the project.”

Sister Donna asked leadership of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, if the Congregation would donate a paver for the project.

And they did.

“This is so important,” Sister Donna said. “It’s been supported by the community in so many ways. The goal is the veterans who live here will, hopefully in time, be able to get permanent housing.”

On Friday, July 31, a ribbon cutting took place for Veterans Village, located at 2227 Maple Ave., Terre Haute.

Sister Donna attended the event along with Sister Mary Montgomery, SP.

Those in attendance were allowed to enter any of the six homes, which include one bathroom, one bedroom, one kitchen and a living area and everything is furnished through donations. Each home was sponsored by a Terre Haute business.

The land where the six homes are was donated to THAAR for the project. Fundraising efforts immediately kicked off and lasted for nearly two years. The donated pavers rest underneath a pavilion in the park area.

The paver the Congregation donated to the project honors the Sisters of Providence nurses who served during war times from 1850-1971.

“I am so happy we are a part of this,” Sister Donna said.
