Journey with Saint Mother Theodore Guerin: A Pilgrimage Celebrating 20 Years of Sainthood

The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, invite the public to walk in the footsteps of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin during a special guided pilgrimage on Sunday, October 11, 2026, marking the 20th anniversary of her canonization.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the pilgrimage will lead participants across the historic grounds of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, visiting sacred places where Indiana’s first saint lived, prayed and ministered.

This special anniversary pilgrimage offers participants an opportunity to reflect on Saint Mother Theodore’s remarkable life and discover the many ways Providence continues to work in the world today. A guided pilgrimage across the historic grounds of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, where participants will visit sacred spaces connected to Saint Mother Theodore’s life, including the Log Cabin Chapel, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and Saint Anne Shell Chapel, kicks off the celebration.

Adding a special dimension to the pilgrimage, Sister Susan Paweski, portraying Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and dressed in the full habit worn during the foundress’ time, will walk alongside pilgrims as a companion on the journey. Her presence will invite participants to imagine walking with the beloved foundress herself and to reflect on the Providence that sustained her through every challenge and called her forward in faith. Along the way, she will offer a living reminder that Providence is not simply part of our history – it is alive, active and at work in the world and in our lives today.

“Saint Mother Theodore was full of life,” said Sister Susan. “She found joy in challenges that seemed insurmountable. As a Sister of Providence, I am tasked to imitate Mother Theodore and share her joyful embrace of Providence with others.”

Saint Mother Theodore became Indiana’s first saint when she was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 15, 2006, during a ceremony at the Vatican. Nearly two centuries after founding the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, her legacy continues through ministries of education, justice, spirituality, care for creation and service to those in need.

Following the pilgrimage, a special Eucharistic Liturgy honoring Saint Mother Theodore will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the historic Church of the Immaculate Conception. A community picnic will follow at noon, offering participants an opportunity to gather in fellowship and celebrate Mother Theodore’s enduring legacy.

  1. God’s Blessing To All. I have been a follower of St. Mother Theodore Guerin for many years. Knowing that she actually walked on the same ground of Southern Indiana, that I too have walked. I have had many personal hero’s but nothing has ever touched my personal being like she does.
