Note: In honor of Mother’s Day, Coordinator of Volunteer Services Sarah Knoblock composed this reflection for all Mothers. Happy Mother’s Day!
I adore the name “Mama.” It is so tender, so special, so infantile and yet, loving.
A baby’s first word is often “Mama.” Probably because they hold us close to their bodies from our first breath.

Mamas nourish from their very selves. They comfort and give us devotion, even when we do nothing to warrant it.
And so, we reach and grasp for our moms, longing for attachment. An intimacy that reflects our Creator’s deep longing for us.
We cannot rest until we rest in God.
We cannot understand love until we know how God loves us.
Isaiah 66:33 says, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”
As little ones, Jesus calls us to Himself, “Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3-4).

How humble is a newborn, expecting food, a dry diaper, endearment.
The cry indicates an unmet need, and the mother rushes to soothe and give care.
May we be like kids, expecting our needs to always be met.
Having faith even when the world mocks or ridicules.
Saint Teresa of Avila blessed us with the thought, “No soul on this road is such a giant that it does not often need to become a child at the breast again … (This must never be forgotten: I may repeat it again and again, for it is of great importance).”
How beautiful to be, again, a baby close to our mama; or, better yet, a little one close to our Heavenly Father’s heart. To experience assurance and total peace, despite any battle or war waged against us.
Sarah,
