My second Sisters of Providence mission experience led me to Providence University, a place deeply rooted in honoring Divine Providence to further God’s loving plans by devoting ourselves to acts of love, mercy and justice among God’s people.
Founded in 1920 in Kaifeng, Henan, China, by Mother Gratia Luking and the Sisters of Providence, the university stands as a testament to God’s enduring guidance.

After the Chinese Civil War, the school moved to Shalu District in Taichung, Taiwan, in 1948 and was re-established in May 1949. It’s history reflects a steadfast trust in God’s providential care during times of uncertainty and change.
As Providence would have it, I was able to attend the university’s 69th anniversary celebration.
During my time here, I was reminded of how God continues to work through places and people dedicated to our Provident God’s luring invitations. It was a meaningful experience to have visited one of our newest buildings.
The sacred space for prayer and reflection is a reminder that, no matter where we are in the world, there is an opportunity to be aware of and attentive to God’s presence in any experience we encounter.
I treasured the blessed opportunity to quiet my spirit and rest in my Beloved Divine’s presence, even though I am often drawn to the joy of active, adventurous engagement to get to know Taiwanese culture, traditions and the beauty of their island.

I was also blessed to meet the Mission Sisters of Providence (MSP), founded by Mother Gratia Luking in 1920. Their lives reflect a deep commitment to the gospel through humble service, compassion and unwavering faith.
In spending time with them allowed me to witness how they live Christ’s call to love and serve humanity faithfully daily. Their way of living simply and responding to the gospel message reminded me to reflect on my own calling to religious life.
