My first Sisters of Providence mission experience took place at Miracle Home in Taishan District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Founded in 2000 by the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, under the leadership of Sister Delan Ma, SP, and now directed by Sister Rose Chiu, SP, this ministry embodies a quiet yet profound witness to compassionate service.

During my time there, I was blessed to witness the ongoing growth of this mission, including the recent dedication of a new building on February 4.
This moment of progress felt symbolic – an outward sign of honoring Divine Providence to further God’s loving plans by devoting ourselves to acts of love, mercy and justice among God’s people – an inward faithful commitment to human dignity, care for the aging and hope for a spirit-filled life.
The vision of Miracle Home is rooted in honoring each person’s capacity to flourish, even in the later stages of life. It offers a space where adults are accompanied with reverence, allowing them to continue becoming who they are called to be.
In witnessing this, I encountered a lived expression of what it means to uphold the sacredness of life at every stage.

I was deeply moved by the sincerity and attentiveness with which the people of Taiwan care for the elderly. Their cultural disposition that prioritizes well-being – not as an obligation, but as a shared value.
In humility, I found myself reflecting on my own cultural context in the United States, recognizing that there is much we can learn from this way of honoring aging as a continued unfolding of life, rather than a diminishment in the later years of our gifted life from the Divine.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit the Missionary Sisters Convent and Our Lady of Providence High School, where the congregation’s spirit continues to inspire me.
These experiences expanded my understanding of global mission through Taiwanese culture – not just as service, but as presence, relationship and fidelity to God’s ongoing invitation to act justly, love tenderly (mercifully) and walk humbly in the world. At the same time, I can’t help but continue to wonder.
This part of my required global immersion experience gently invited me to trust more deeply in Divine Providence. It reminded me that true accompaniment is rooted in compassion, grounded in respect for human dignity, and shown through acts of love that honor each person as a sacred and my ongoing co-creation with my creator.
This experience gently invites me to embrace and trust Providence by remaining open, to be attentive and faithful in how I walk alongside others, trusting that my partnership with my Provident God is revealed in every encounter of care, presence and love.
Since Saint Mother Theodore Guerin said, if I give the Holy Spirit free access to my mind and my heart, I will see many things in new lights.

Jessica, thanks for sharing your profound reflection of your Providence experience. In Taiwan.
Jessica, I have a deeper understanding of the spirit of Miracle Home as well as the Mission of our Taiwanese Sisters of Providence and the Missionary S+P’s. Thank you.
