Gospel Reflection

May 31, 2026: The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity

Gospel: John 3:16-18

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Reflection

Can you picture this scripture John 3:16 painted on a large poster held up during the last national sporting event you watched? Most of us no longer need the words to understand the intent. The message encourages us to focus our attention on God’s action for human beings. I want to expand how we think about this.

God so loved the world.

Because we understand this to be true, where else might we place signs with John 3:16?

Here are some of my suggestions:

  • In the corner of a blooming garden,
  • On the tent in a homeless camp,
  • In the ordered rows or a corn or soybean field,
  • On the welcome sign of a food pantry,
  • On a bird feeder,
  • On the ceiling of a planetarium,
  • On buoys near the shore of Lake Michigan,
  • On a tray of surgical items in an operating room,
  • At a local humane society, and
  • In boxes of crayons or paints.

God so loved the world.

And the world is an extremely big place!

Action

Where do you see God “so loving the world?”

Make your list and hang your own signs.
