They cared about the poor. And they cared about us. I just had a fabulous experience at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College largely because of them,” Kathy said.

As the Providence Cristo Rey High School in Indianapolis marks the end of its 10th year of operation, it seemed only fitting that we share some of the many “success stories” of its graduates.

“We were treated just like the black people were treated because we were recognized as ‘Oh, those are the sisters who teach the black kids.’ And so they treated us like black people, and it was a wonderful experience for me,” Sister Laurine Haley says of her time helping to integrate the Catholic schools in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

My teaching experience took me to different schools in different cities and towns where I met and fell in love with more children. Teaching double grades and constantly working on meeting the individual needs continued to challenge me.
Then it came time for me to dust the chalk off my hands, put myself confidently in the hands of Providence and change the focus of my “mission.” I became a hospital chaplain. Like teaching, I loved this work
