If you Google “Valentine’s Day,” you will get the usual plethora of responses – from its origins in ancient Rome in the third century A.D., to its present day commercialization. Definitions abound. One entry I liked was simple and direct: “St. Valentine’s Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration.” That definition reminded me of one of the Super Bowl commercials (one of the few I really understood, I might add, at least prior to half-time)....

...those who experience racism and prejudice in our society. This is an unusual time to be alive – and an unusual time to be renewing vows as a Sister of Providence. Not all at once, mind you, but ya know …...

...for me has been meeting a gentleman who needed a ride to and from Mass on Sundays during January and February this year. My uncle has taken him to Mass for quite some time and was in Florida during these months. My husband and I offered to fill in and have fallen in love with this 82-year-old man. In addition to weekly Mass, he joined us for chili on Super Bowl Sunday at our home and we have become fast...

...and memories! Marian brought her children to visit when they were very small. Stephen as a toddler dressed in a suit and tie. Adrienne as a babe in arms. Laurette was always Rettie to the children and many of her friends today know her by that name. Adrienne and her brother Steve remember doing all sorts of fun things with Rettie, especially several sports in which Laurette excelled: Swimming, bowling, tennis, water ballet, fencing and golf. They were also allowed...

...And do you remember seeing the bowl of hosts that was brought to the altar at the offertory of the Mass? The beautiful arrangement — it must have taken her a very long time to have them placed so carefully, even artistically,” shared Sister Mary Pat. “One of Sister Rosemary’s diversions while living in Providence Hall was working three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles. Believe me, those can be a real challenge. I suppose that went well with her perfectionist temperament. “During her...

...It was empty. Empty but not useless. One of the sisters came out to find pieces of wood suitable for making wooden flutes. A local woodcarver arrived to find wood to create hand-hewn bowls and crosses and angels – all sorts of wooden objects. Workers will saw the tree into pieces and then make woodchips to use in landscaping on the campus. In all these ways and more, the mighty white oak continues its life and usefulness. Usefulness isn’t everything...

...well, you will not be surprised by this list. The sisters’ bold commitment to environmental sustainability has been lived out through the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice and its programming over the past 20 years. The issue of human trafficking might bring back memories of the sisters’ involvement in a human trafficking awareness campaign leading up to Super Bowl 2012 in Indianapolis. Ministries like Providence in the Desert in Coachella, California, and Providence Family Services in Chicago, Illinois, have extended...

...Ebony would greet me like I was her long-lost cousin she hadn’t seen in decades. She was like this with almost everyone on a daily basis. A teaser – yes, she liked to inject some humor into each day. When Steve would lie on the floor and say, “Come give Daddy kisses,” she would start toward him and then decide that she was going to her food bowl instead. This back and forth routine would go on for some minutes...
