Sister Pauline Brockelsby

...years of ministry here, Pauline proved to be very adaptable, serving as driver, printer, mail deliverer, and phone room receptionist. Sister Mary Ann Phelan noted that as she made her rounds, during the lead-up to Mother Theodore’s canonization, her own devotion was such that she would stop by the office to request prayer cards with a relic so she could give one to any sister who had requested prayers for a family member or friend in the Day-by-Day and would...

Sister Jean Anne Maher (formerly Sister Roberta Marie)

...me. Yes, we are all thankful to her for her work, but more for her. She was a prayerful, considerate, caring, grateful, thoughtful, sometimes funny sister to us. One sister said Sister Jean Anne’s ministry was making telephone calls. Anytime your name was listed as requesting prayer for a loved one, you received a phone call promising her prayers. Did you do something nice for her? The thank you card would be in your mailbox the following day. Did you...

Call to Action: The Call to Holiness in an Election Year

During a recent gathering with young people, Cardinal Cupich was asked how our faith should inform our politics and our voting decisions. Responding with wisdom, Cardinal Cupich invited the group to reflect on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, “Gaudete et Exsultate” (“Rejoice and Be Glad”). He went on to point out that in this magisterial document, especially paragraph 101, the Holy Father urges us to participate in political debate, as opposed to limiting our involvement to the voting booth. There should...

Does it spark joy?

...my bedroom, including the closet. Not just the regular dust and vacuum clean, but REALLY cleaning. Tossing some “stuff” was easy: The cards from my Golden Jubilee (two-and-a-half years ago!), which somehow got put into a bag to reread later; the sweater that shrunk after I left in the dryer for way too long; and pens that had run out of ink long ago. When it came to other things, a different challenge presented itself. But, I was prepared. All...

Being love, mercy and justice in parish ministry

Editor’s note: When you read the Sisters of Providence recently published Annual Report, you will find highlights on how your donations help our sisters carry out works of love, mercy and justice in the world. Here Sister Carole Kimes shares how she lives out love, mercy and justice in her ministry as director of Pastoral Care at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Carmel, Indiana. Our pastor wrote in my Christmas card: “Thank you for helping us love the many who...

Sister Josephine Paolinelli (formerly Sister Louise Joseph)

...drastically diminished. However, she made it to her birthday on November 1. Although she was weak and not super with it, we (Terri, I and her cousin Priscilla) enjoyed every second of it. Terri and I played all her voicemails with all the birthday messages that her friends and family left for her and we read all her birthday cards to her. She was and continues to be loved. Having fun on a break are, from left, Sisters Andre Panepinto,...

Sister Patricia McIntyre (formerly Sister Elaine)

...chosen to crown the Blessed Mother during the parish’s May procession. Patty wore a long white dress and a bridal veil and carried a large and elaborate bouquet. Margie remembers Patty looked beautiful. A page from Sister Patty’s scrapbook shows her as a young girl. Lest we get the idea that Patty was a goody two-shoes, she made this wry observation about her place in the family. “At report card time my sisters often came home with straight A’s and...

A ‘Happy Endings’ update on St. Joseph’s Lake

As you may know, Pope Francis decreed 2021 a Year of St. Joseph so “every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will.” Along with Sister Jean Fuqua and because of her swimming prowess, Cynthia MacWhorter dove to the bottom of the lake and helped secure the floating raft to boulders. This image, entitled “Happy Lake Card,” depicts the hand-crafted card Cynthia created as a tribute in...

My journey with Providence

...I could not enter the healthcare center, I sent regular cards to the residents. The 3rd graders at my parish also made Easter cards for every resident this year, and I mailed them to Sister Claire for distribution. I have also written a few poems and reflections for the Providence Community website, blog, and HOPE magazine. I look forward to continuing in all my ministries. Reflecting The Providence Community, including Providence Associates, offers the sign of peace during Mass. So...

A sea of green yes cards filled O’Shaughnessy Dining Hall. During the recent General Chapter, the Sisters of Providence and Providence Associates voted to affirm antiracism as the justice focus for the coming years. The process leading up to the vote began many months prior. Sisters and Providence Associates provided...
