Renewing spiritually at the Woods

...me there.” Sister Paula Damiano, retreat director for Providence Spirituality and Conference Center, says, “People are drawn to the silence and solitude here at Saint Mary-of-the Woods. There are places where you can walk, rest and pray. Some come to center themselves and refocus. Others because they are dealing with issues in their lives and want to explore them in the context of prayer. We even had an author stay for a month so she could write her book without...

Visitors from Taiwan Sisters Celeste Tsai and Delan Ma accompanied 25 Taiwanese pilgrims to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in late October. NGOs – Conscience of the UN!

Sister Cathy Campbell recently attended United Nations for Non-Governmental Organizations, Forums on the Environment and Spirituality and Values meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. On a lower level of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, are a series of conference rooms and offices where the “conscience of the United Nations” pulses. At least that is what I discovered on Jan. 19, 2016. That day, I had the privilege of participating in meetings of standing Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), Forums on the Environment...

Forgiveness and mercy

“Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” This was a quote we reflected on during the retreat “Forgiveness: The Path Inward.” Sister Paula Damiano and I facilitated the retreat several months ago at Providence Spirituality and Conference Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Our first goal with the retreat was to establish what forgiveness is and what it is not. We looked at some myths that exist about forgiveness: “I can’t forgive because I...

Linden Leaf Gifts: Not just a store!

...you answered “yes” to all of the questions. But if you answered “no” to any of these questions, or even if you answered “yes,” there are probably a few things you should learn, particularly as Mother’s day approaches. The Sisters of Providence DO have a gift store which is located in Providence Spirituality & Conference Center. The name, Linden Leaf Gifts, was chosen because the Linden Tree was a favorite of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. It is a beautiful space...

Collaborating against Human Trafficking

...which this practice is common on a global level. Then think of someone you love and try to imagine that adult or child living in such conditions. In fact, each of these persons in this talk is our brother or sister, made in the image of God. In the last several years, more and more grassroots organizations are taking steps to eradicate such tragic practices. We have and are collaborating with the Leadership Conference of Women religious and other organizations...

A tangible reminder of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

...extend the mission and ministry of the Sisters of Providence through Providence Spirituality and Conference Center. (It) acts as a conduit between the public and the Sisters of Providence.” It is a real ministry! And that is what I find the most inspiring. As the tourist/pilgrim continues through the Shrine area after leaving the Shrine Chapel, she or he seems sent out by Saint Mother Theodore “as birds from the nest” into the world of today and is introduced to...

In April 2016, I, as general superior of the Sisters of Providence, received a...

A look at the fountain

Did you know the fountain in front of Providence Spirituality & Conference Center wasn’t always there? Neither did I, but thanks to the sisters in Archives, I learned some of the history of the fountain. Now you can too! Prior to 1913, the fountain did not exist, as you can see by this photo. However, photographic evidence shows that by 1914, there was a fountain. The sisters in Archives found information regarding the fountain and its origins, learning that per...

Eliminating the Death Penalty in the United States: A Work in Progress

The Sisters of Providence have been partnering with the Indiana Abolition Coalition, the Indiana Catholic Conference and Catholic Mobilizing Network to end the death penalty in Indiana. Currently, the United States is one of a handful of countries where most executions occur. Renewing a Culture of Life booklets were made available this summer at the General Chapter meeting of the Sisters of Providence. At that time, 19 states in the nation had banned the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network...
