Asking questions: Feast Day 2012

...Theodore’s ability to love Sister Basilide confounds me. Basilide betrayed Mother Theodore, sought to supplant her position in the community, allied herself with Bishop de la Halandière – the bishop who locked up Mother Theodore to prevent her return to Saint Mary’s, the bishop who excommunicated Mother Theodore. This is the man with whom Basilide chose to side. The story tells of Mother Theodore’s return to Saint Mary’s after the bishop’s harsh treatment. Everyone came to greet her except Basilide...

2025 Reflection for Foundation Day

Note: The following reflection was given by General Superior Sister Dawn Tomaszewski during the October 22, 2025, Foundation Day. “Remember that this union, this charity, this love was also founded here 185 years ago today.“ On October 22, 1855, the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Mother Theodore Guerin is said to have passed a significant portion of the day in her room. She had been ill much of that summer and fall....

Remembering who we are and why we are here!

...she added, “Mother Theodore’s YES is so meaningful because we would not all be here, we would not all be connected in the family of Providence.” (Thank you, Mel.) Another PA, Jeannie Smith, also tied her own experience to that of Mother Theodore’s. She wrote: “Something that always touches my heart about the foundation story is the sorrow of separation that the foundresses, especially Mother Theodore, felt on leaving Ruille, their beloved home. That pain was always with her, yet...

Oral history: Sister Ann Sullivan

...beginning, Mother Theodore established schools for girls, overcame the discounting of women in the Indiana wilderness, and treasured the land. “Mother Theodore Guerin was so connected to the natural world. Her whole presence was respectful.” “… for you will see many things in new lights if you give the Holy Spirit free access to your minds and hearts.” – Saint Mother Theodore Guerin On to teaching In 1969 Sister Ann Therese Sullivan received her education degree from SMWC and began...

A reflection for Mother’s Day

Providence Associates co-director Debbie Dillow shared this reflection with Providence Associates and Sisters so we wanted to share this Mother’s Day reflection with all of you. Happy Mother’s Day! French roots

Mother Theodore returns to France! A strong, fruitful tree is only as good as it’s long, deep roots. The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods wouldn’t exist today if it weren’t for the French Sisters of Providence from Ruillé sur Loir. Our foundress, Mother Theodore Guerin, spent her initial formation at the motherhouse in Ruillé and it was from there that she was first sent out on mission, to teach in various schools in France. Find out more about the...

Sister Elizabeth Meyer (formerly Sister Joseph Aloyse)

Knowing the Gospel reading for today and Sister Elizabeth Meyer’s life, I thought to myself, “Yes, Elizabeth was ‘a lilies and flowers of the field, and birds of the air,’ kind of person.” Her life was simple, her faith was simple, she seemingly lived a day at a time, without a lot of worry about her life or the future, said Sister Ann Casper in her commentary for Sister Elizabeth Meyer, formerly Sister Joseph Aloyse, who passed away on Wednesday,...

Reflections for Foundation Day — Oct. 22, 2018

...this magnificent church in which we gather today. Saint Mother Theodore Guerin But we know that something happened to Theodore inside that log cabin chapel. Mother Mary Cecilia Bailley, Mother Theodore’s first biographer, wrote of what Mother Theodore used to tell of that moment: “When, however, Sister Theodore saw where Our Lord reposed, it revived all her courage; she was ready to endure any privation when He took His abode in a place so poor and humble. She often spoke...
