Families and individuals in need of educational programs and family services in Chicago and Coachella, California, receive assistance from Guerin Outreach Ministries, Inc., a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana.

Together, these ministries provide a variety of services: English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, GED classes, homework help and a safe place after school for children, citizenship classes, music classes, computer literacy classes, and bilingual counseling. These ministries support children, individuals, and families, many of whom are economically disadvantaged. No one is ever refused service for inability to pay.
Meet the Board of Directors
- Sister Patty Fillenwarth, SP – president/director
Sister Patty Fillenwarth was born in Indianapolis on Sept. 1, 1940. She lives in Chicago at Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent. She has a bachelor’s degree in Education from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and masters’ degrees in Education (from Indiana State University) and Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University). She’s been a Sister of Providence since 1958 and she’s taught at a variety of schools and was principal at Maternity B.V.M. from 1977-1990.
- Sister Carol Nolan, SP – vice president/director
Sister Carol Nolan was born in Galesburg, Illinois on Nov. 28, 1932. She lives in Coachella, California. She has a bachelor’s degree in music from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and masters’ degrees in music (Illinois State University) and German (Portland State University). She’s been a Sister of Providence since 1951 and she’s taught at schools in Indianapolis, Chicago, River Grove as well as in Austria, Taiwan and Mexico.
- Sue Heck – secretary/treasurer
Sue Heck was raised in Tell City, Indiana and she lives in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She has a bachelor’s degree from Butler University and a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. She was an elementary school teacher and then began working at Powell-Stephenson Lumber, ending up as president when it closed in 1996. She’s also worked at Associated Door & Plywood Company as manager and president until it closed in 2002. She currently works for the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in their development office in Terre Haute.
- April Bradley – director
April Bradley was born in Los Angeles in 1943 and she lives with her husband in Cathedral City, California. She has an associate’s degree in Liberal Studies. She was an airline stewardess and for 30 years, worked in a hospital in San Pablo, California, as a cardiac technician, also raising three children.
- Don Bradley – director
Don Bradley was born in Sacramento, California in 1944. He and his wife April live in Cathedral City, California, located in the Coachella Valley. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
Sister Mary Beth Klingel, SP – GOM member liaison to the General Council leadership team
- Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Smigla, SP – director
Sister Betty Smigla was born in Chicago and lives in River Grove, Illinois. She has a bachelor’s degree in education from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, a certification in administration from DePaul University and a master’s degree in special education from Northeastern Illinois University. She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1957.
Sister Mary Tomlinson, SP – development director
Sister Mary Tomlinson was born in Chicago in 1947 and she now lives in Brookfield, Illinois. She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 2008 with a degree in political science. She entered the SPs in 1990 and has ministered in various areas.
