Sisters of Providence welcome new postulant
The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods welcomed Jessica Sun as a new postulant on Friday, September 4, marking the start of her postulancy with the Congregation.
Sun knocked on the historic entrance door of Providence Hall and was welcomed by General Superior Dawn Tomaszewski and other Sisters of Providence. Postulancy is a period of discernment and formation during which Sun will learn more about the Sisters of Providence, their history, spirituality, community life and ministries.
Sun, a graduate of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, worked as a software engineer and advocate in Northern Virginia before beginning her journey with the Sisters of Providence.
Her journey to religious life began through a long search for meaning, faith, and a deeper understanding of what it means to love and serve others. Sun was drawn to the Sisters of Providence because of their commitment to love, mercy, justice and service, as well as the joy and authenticity she experiences among the Sisters.
“I love the way they love each other,” she said. “I see the joy there. I see realness and authenticity in how they interact with each other. I am humbled by the legacy of a Providence community.”
Sun began the formation process in 2023. Her postulancy will continue her discernment as she lives and learns within the Congregation. Following postulancy and further discernment, she may enter the canonical novitiate, followed by additional stages of formation, temporary vows, and eventually final perpetual vows.
Women interested in learning more about religious life are invited to participate in a Sisters of Providence Come and See Spiritual Weekend Retreat at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on October 23-25, 2026. The retreat is free and open to single Catholic women ages 18-42.
