My Indiana! Meet our new director of Mission Advancement

...just south of my family home into Galesburg if you drive west about 220 miles. The route continues along the beautiful winding Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Memorial Highway, before arriving at the very special place known as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. When my husband Phil, our daughter Maggie and I arrived at the Woods, we stopped outside the Farm Store at the White Violet Center, taking in the beauty of familiar farm views and smells. We all said we could feel the...

Ask Sister Dina: How many Sisters of Providence are there and what are their roles?

...a difference between the motherhouse grounds (which we lovingly call “The Woods”) and that of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Both were started by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, but they are two separate legal entities. Of the 238 Sisters, 102 live on the motherhouse grounds. 136 live elsewhere in various parts of North America and Asia. A photo of Sisters of Providence and Providence Associates taken during the 2018 Annual Meeting. As far as “duties/roles,” we each discern the ministries we participate...

The Crypt in the Church of the Immaculate Conception

One of the fascinating places in the Church of the Immaculate Conception is referred to as “the crypt”. This is the area below the church. More than twenty years ago it was used extensively by the sisters. It had its own altar and seats. Large statues of many saints surrounded the room. By the pillars in the nave there were statues of Our Lady of Grace, Saint Joseph, Saint Philomene, Saint Barbara, Saint Anthony, Saint Therese, and Saint Rita. The...

A legacy of hospitality

...freely with guests whose presence energizes us. We are touched by their enthusiasm, inspired by their stories. Today sisters offer hospitality to guests in Owens Hall at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. For several years we have offered hospitality to visitors to the Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute, about a 15-minute drive from the Woods. One recent guest, Jolene Brackey is from Polson, Montana. Before her first visit to a death row inmate, she heard from the inmate that he “would be much...

The woman behind the saint

...in her day. She … was a strong woman leader. Within a year of arriving in Indiana, she established the Academy, now known as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She inspired women to follow her and founded the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, a group of vowed women who still today live out her legacy to create a more just and hope-filled world. She … experienced prejudice. Many people weren’t accepting of Catholics in the 1840s, especially Catholic women who tried...

Journals and Letters week 8: Indiana arrival

[Today we are discussing “Journals and Letters“: page 53 In Indiana to page 60 The Journey’s End. Join us in reading a portion of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin‘s writings every week in the coming year.] This drawing depicts the log cabin chapel where Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her five companion-sisters gave thanks for a safe voyage upon their arrival at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Oct. 22, 1840. As I read Mother Theodore’s detailed account of meeting the poorly clothed priest, I wondered if...

Filled with the life of our dear Mother Theodore

...places in the shrine. Leaves of the variety of trees of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods have been traced on panels that set-off the windows throughout the shrine. The white violet, the flower she chose for the seal of St. Mary’s Academy because of its strength and uniqueness, is etched on the doors leading to the chapel where her body is entombed. And above the coffin holding her remains is a walnut wood canopy etched with Linden leaves. Even the stained glass windows...

A Reflection on the Feast Day of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

(Note: The following is the reflection General Superior Sister Dawn Tomaszewski offered on the Feast Day of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin): The readings for this Feast Day of our beloved Saint Mother Theodore Guerin have become like old friends. That first reading from Sirach sounds like a biography of our beloved Theodore. If you come forward to serve God, prepare yourself … Set your heart right and be steadfast … Cleave to God; do not depart … Accept whatever is...

Digitizing the letters and journals of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

Jazmyne Magee, a student from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, helps scan and preserve letters written by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. When Mother Mary Lecor sent six French Sisters of Providence to the wilderness of Indiana in 1840, she told Sister St. Theodore Guerin to keep careful records of all that happened. Mother Theodore complied enthusiastically with lengthy, lively, detailed journals and letters. Mother Mary wryly cautioned — “More piety, less romance.” Fortunately, Sister St. Theodore was incapable of...

Strength from being ordinary this Foundation Day

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her companions first arrived at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on this day in 1840. Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her five sister companions arrived at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, on this day in 1840. We Sisters of Providence, Providence Associates and the community at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College all celebrate this day as our Foundation Day. As I write this it is dark and dreary outside. The dampness enters into one’s bones. But I have a warm house and...
