Reflecting on Crises with Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

...is our full-time ministry now — payer. Pray Later on, in that same letter, Mother Theodore continues her thoughts… “At New Orleans, the contagion attacked only those who were predisposed by an enfeebled constitution or by excesses. We are going to have public prayers for you. Say every day … the prayer that they say every night at Ruillé after night prayers. Finally, if the plague makes great ravages in your city (which I do not anticipate, as its inhabitants...

Sister Ruth Ellen Doane

...these trips, Ellen drove them out West to look for American Indiana artifacts. She talked about that trip with the ‘Germans’ for a long time and I’m not sure she ever recovered from it. In our family, Ellen was considered the ‘Go-To’ person for prayers. At our son Brian’s wedding, she prayed for them to have children. We knew then we would have more grandchildren. It seemed that God heard her prayers more than anyone else. We will miss her,...

Welcoming the Spring Equinox

...plans and so many other plans in 2020. One of the resources I use for daily prayer is the Celtic devotional by Caitlin Mathews. It is an older book no longer in print. What I like about it is it has a morning and evening prayer for every day of the week and also the prayers changes seasonally. It follows the Celtic calendar where winter includes the months of November December and January. Spring is February March and April. This...

Journals and Letters week 46: God’s flowers

...not to herself but to God.” In the midst of her grief, she used the circumstances of Sister Josephine’s death to advocate that her daughters practice self-care. She counseled that doing so honors God who bestows the gift of life. God wants those to whom it is given to use it wisely. Grief The outpouring of grief continued as the community shared their experiences of loss. Sister St. Francis Xavier recorded that “grief-stricken Father Corbe could hardly finish the prayers...

Sister Shawn Marie McDermott

I was told that Shawn Marie read the scriptures every day during her morning prayers. So no wonder – after 61 years, she was able to choose these beautiful passages as her last words of love to you, to her family, friends and colleagues: “… You have a permanent place in my heart. God knows how much I miss you; loving you as Christ Jesus loves us. I pray that the love you have for each other may increase more...

Ash Wednesday: The ‘Black Friday’ of the Church year

...be elaborate and complex. Today, my prayer routine is less about maintaining a strict schedule for the Divine Office (which I still find beneficial) or a litany of rote prayers. My routine hinges upon the ability to spend time quietly reminding myself of God’s presence in and around me. This happens in Eucharistic Adoration (a great practice to explore), using daily meditation guides or lectio divina or just shuffling the cards around on my iPad solitaire games (not a form...

They will appreciate knowing this. Through our Generalate, we receive news of them daily. So far,...
