Sister Jeanne Hagelskamp, a 38-year member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, received the Indiana Commission for Women’s Torchbearer Award for lifetime achievement during ceremonies Wednesday (March 6) in Indianapolis. In 1889, the Sisters of Providence were asked by the pastor to staff St. Rose School (grade and high) in Chelsea, Massachusetts. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur had been teaching there, but the pastor wanted to include boys, and these sisters taught only girls. The high school closed in 1987 because of a great decrease in enrollment.
