2020 Christmas letter from General Superior Sister Dawn Tomaszewski

...difficulties and dangers of this past year to keep me from recognizing the Christ and from welcoming hope in my very midst? I am reminded of Pope Francis’ exhortation on hope: “We feel disoriented and even rather discouraged, because we are powerless and it seems this darkness will never end. We must not let hope abandon us, because God walks with us. God does not leave us to ourselves.” This notion that God does not leave us to ourselves is...

Ready to ring in a New Year!

...I’ve looked at the compilation, different quotes have seemed just right for the day. I promise not to print the complete list, but let me share a few that today seem most apropos to the beginning of this new year. (For the complete list, click here). Here’s the sampling: An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves (William E. Vaughn) Take a leap of faith...

Journals and Letters week 16: Welcome support

...distributed to readers, asking for donations in support of the mission. It was noted that the circulation of the paper “… reaches nearly everywhere, and we must not doubt that this publicity will bear great fruit. …” And it did. Later they printed Mother Theodore’s third journal which produced another source of income. Our benefactors of today Our present benefactors mirror these early supporters of our mission — a caring woman, a priest, two prominent businessmen — all in their...

Sister Mary Louise O’Connor (formerly Sister James Margaret)

On the first floor of Providence Hall, one can make a pilgrimage in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. On several window sills sit a wonderful array of images of the mother of Jesus. Striking among them is a print of muted tones capturing a tender moment between Mary and her cousin Elizabeth. With arms around each other’s shoulders, the closeness, the affection, the love between them is palpable. Here the young, pregnant Mary, at the very beginning of her...

Mother Theodore offers support for living with mental illness

A woman, who at times suffered thoughts of wanting to die and flashbacks to traumatic times, managed to found an order of Catholic sisters and a college. Both are still making a positive impact on the world nearly 200 years later. She also left, in her “Journals and Letters,” a blueprint for handling emotional distress and mental anxieties. Its hallmarks: kindness and common sense. That woman was Mother Theodore Guerin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana....

...Sisters of Providence” contains additional information about Sister Josephine. Dr. Read’s tribute, that was printed in the “Wabash Courier,” is on page 737. Perhaps you might want to spend some time reading and reflecting on it. Was there anything in any of the Letters Circular or in the individual letters to Sisters Gabriela, Veronica or Basilide that lead to an insight that you would like to share? Next week page 410 to page 416 mid-page. View the complete reading series....

Sister Mary Ryan

...1989. She professed her first vows on June 28, 1992, and final vows on July 20, 1996. She was not educated by the Sisters of Providence, so her first contact with us was when she met Sister Shawn Marie McDermott, who at the time was ministering as a pastoral associate at St. John the Baptist Parish in Peabody, Massachusetts, which was Mary’s home parish. Sister Shawn Marie became her mentor and loyal friend. Mary attended Danvers High School in Danvers,...

Smile for the camera!

My colleague and I recently had occasion to visit with a number of Sisters of Providence, most of whom could not attend the Congregation’s 40th Chapter at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in October 2021. Casey Kellum, the official photographer and graphic designer for Advancement Services, and I were on a mission of bringing a significant project to a close, seeking the last few photos of Sisters of Providence so she could send an updated pictorial membership directory to print. We were down...

...many projects. Our reflection contains the entire slate of work done since 2011, including those projects sponsored by the Climate Change Task Force. We intend for our formal plan to be available in 2023. This first year of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform is one of preparation and establishing ourselves on the Laudato Si’ Action Platform website. Each year, we will repeat the process, with the goal of reducing our carbon footprint, updating our reflection and providing status on projects...

Back to school: A teacher’s perspective

...than the income; the most important professional in your town; a really easy job, like riding a bike, except that the bike is on fire, you are on fire, and everything is on fire.” Yes! The second shirt has a peace sign over a heart-shaped graphic with the words: “Teach love and peace.” Such a worthy goal! The third is a long sleeve shirt. On it is printed the alphabet, letter by letter, except for that word in the middle,...
