Immersion farm experience
An organic farm experience at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, can be life-changing!
This is not a field study.
This is not classroom study.
This is real farm work that helps participants understand what it really takes to grow food, raise animals and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Learn what it takes to run a small USDA certified organic farm. At White Violet Center we have a garden, orchard, berry patch, two high tunnels, a greenhouse, a small apiary and a farm store. Be a part of planning, planting, nurturing, weeding, harvesting, cleaning and selling produce that you helped grow. You’ll also get to help make value-added products in our commercial kitchen, where we use methods such as dehydrating, fermenting and pickling.
Participate in the care of our herd of alpacas and flock of chickens. You’ll be responsible for gathering eggs, cleaning out the chicken coop, feeding the alpacas, and even shoveling manure. Our alpacas are raised for their fiber. Each spring they are professionally sheared and the fiber is cleaned and either turned into yarn or kept for felting and other projects. The garments made from our yarn are sold as income for the farm. There will be an opportunity to learn about fiber arts in the winter months when work on the farm slows down.
Full-time immersion, volunteer and internship experiences are available throughout the year. Experience all the seasons or choose one or two.
Housing, meals and monthly stipend available.
