Sisters of Providence to take part in ‘Science, Art, and Faith: Aligning’ (Canceled)

The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, will join with others to take part in the upcoming “Science, Art, and Faith: Aligning” conference celebrating the upcoming eclipse.

The conference will take place April 6-8 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The conference coincides with the total solar eclipse which will directly pass over the area of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on April 8.

The purpose of the conference is to help blend dialogue regarding science, art and faith

Sisters of Providence Justice Promoter, Sister Barbara Battista, SP, will be one of the featured speakers during the conference.

Sister Barbara’s session will focus on “Health Outcome Disparities: Catholic Social Teaching & the work for Systematic Change in American Healthcare.”

During her presentation, Sister Barbara will explore the systemic inequities built into the American healthcare system while offering steps toward aligning equitable approaches to healthcare that recognize community humanity across cultures, genders, ethnicities, economic standing and faith traditions.

Sister Barbara has a master’s of education from Indiana State University and trained as a physician assistant at Cook County Hospital, located in Chicago. She has also ministered as a spiritual companion for death row inmates.

In addition, staff with the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, will also offer a tour of the organic vegetable and flower gardens on the campus of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Those attending will receive close-up interaction with the Congregation’s alpaca herd and chicken flock, while learning more about the history of the center, techniques they use and sustainability principles.

The keynote speakers for the event include Christopher Baglow, PhD, The University of Notre Dame; Stephen Barr, PhD, President of the Society of Catholic Scientists; and Sister Jocelyn Edathil, SIC, MD, PhD, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

Other breakout session presenters include Jeffrey Bishop, MD, PhD, Saint Louis University School of Medicine; Arthur Canales, DMin, Marian University in Indianapolis; Edward Ferguson, PhD, and Christine Wilkey, MSW, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Elizabeth Markman, PhD, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Suzen Moeller, PhD, North Park University, Sister Dawn Nothwehr, OSF, Catholic Theological Union; Carolyn Pirtle, MM, MSM, MA, The University of Notre Dame; and Joseph Vukov, PhD, Loyola University of Chicago.

Films will also be shown during the conference and discussion among those attending will take place.
