Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the first ministry of the Sisters of Providence, founded by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her companion sisters just months after they arrived in the United States in 1840. A vibrant college community located at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, the Sisters continue to sponsor the college.

'I think she had a distinct ability to always look forward. She was always visionary, ahead of her time.'

Trustee Alice Shelton said the retreat was very important. “The public tends to view Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Sisters of Providence as being very close together.”

Before discerning a focus, sisters and associates gave input on their priorities. Six key justice issues emerged: environment, human trafficking, immigration and refugees, anti-racism, women’s issues and nonviolence. Still … there was a clear desire for focus.

Sister Carol Nolan received the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Award for possessing similar purpose, devotion, community vitality and leadership as exhibited by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s foundress.
