Sister Nancy Nolan (formerly Sister Jean Paula)

...Advent Card, and in it reminded her how instrumental she had been in encouraging new ministry initiatives. Nancy remembered actively promoting our own ministries — Barbara Ann Zeller’s plan mentioned earlier or Sister Brendan Harvey walking into her office and suggesting we start a food pantry. The Ministry Fund was established and the White Violet Center opened during Nancy’s term. And who can forget the possibilities Chapter of 1996 set into motion by Nancy and her council that created more...

Gratitude

We hold in our hearts those who are ill and unable to be with family and friends. Grant healing to them and peace to their family and friends. Winter blues? Farmer Tara recommends a little friluftsliv!

...and chickens that provide delicious food (greens, root crops, and eggs) for our community along with the alpacas that provide warmth and coziness with fiber goods (not to mention the joy they provide because of their adorable faces). New opportunities A meet and greet with the alpacas is part of the outdoor farm tour currently offered. Although I’ve been involved with WVC for a few years now, this winter it is offering something new — an outdoor tour!  It’s an...

Sister Ruth Ellen Doane

...WHOLE time, working so hard, never complaining. And for lunch, she always had soup of sandwiches made for us. One year, we will always remember, she made a huge pot of chili. It was so delicious, but it had spaghetti in it. We had never seen chili with spaghetti. But she let us know, “this is how we make chili in Indiana!” By the way, Ruth’s culinary skills and recipes were featured in a full-page article in the Food Section...

An unexpected blessing

As February drew near, I dreaded the annual request for volunteers to make calls to our donors asking for donations. How did I know how this year of COVID-19 had affected them? How many had lost jobs, lost loved ones, waited in line for hours for food or vaccine shots? My response to the request was slow and reluctant, but finally I volunteered telling myself our donors would welcome being able to share with us what this year was like....

...missionary years in which he had to hunt for the little food he had, but in which he was so happy. And of his death in which he continued to bless the sisters to the end. We learn that he is buried here at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods because he himself desired it. “He was all for us in life, so he wished to remain with us in death,” the author says. A sketch of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods done by Fr. Corbe in...

...and Justice, Pilgrimages, and Liturgical Dance. Sister Judy Cervizzi, who lived with Mary Pat, reports that Mary Pat loved to take long walks (once at midnight in a snowstorm), to try exotic foods, to propose new ideas and new programs. Judy recalls that “Every once in a while, her idea would die in the water and she would say to me, ‘Kid, you win some and you lose some! But this won’t stop me from trying another new idea,’ and...

Sisters of Providence struggles and wisdom amidst pandemic

...volunteers at the Providence Food Pantry in West Terre Haute. Through it all, numerous sisters have continued their ministries, often at least initially adapted. Those in medical facilities have faced firsthand the pain of COVID-19 and the blessings of working with those who suffer and their families. Initially, Sister Betty Hopf had to do pastoral ministry through phone conversations with patients. She soon realized “how much more effective my ministry would be if I could see and touch my patients....

...cholera at the time, and foreshadows some of our current practices: “Be cheerful, kind to one another. Have nothing on your conscience that could trouble you. Do not fast. Let your food be wholesome and well prepared. Keep your house, the yard, and also your persons clean. Change your linen often and have your children clean also, if they are still with you. Finally, my dear daughters, pray.” Today we feel both admiration and concern for caregivers who risk their...

100+ year old sisters survive COVID-19

...she and 105-year-old Sister Marceline Mattingly, the Congregation’s two centenarians, both survived their bouts with COVID-19. For Sister Marceline, things were touch and go for some time. She was sleeping nearly all the time and hardly eating or drinking. She began being offered “comfort measures” only, meaning if she woke food and water were offered but never pushed. Much to everyone’s delight, after more than 20 days of uncertainty, Sister Marceline was able to sit up, eat more and communicate...
