Religious life is a call from God spoken to women and men to live out the radical Gospel message of Jesus in today’s world. How is this call being answered today? Society tells me that young women struggle with commitment. However, in my work as Vocations Director for the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, I am in awe of the courage and tenacity of the young women I walk with. They are deep seekers through whom I experience...

...life has been an opportunity for long-term coming and seeing, as well as tasting, seeing and hearing, what religious life is about as a young woman in the 21st century. It was an experience that welcomed me to jump into a new lifestyle with both feet. I left three decades of a California girl lifestyle. It was difficult, but through the grace of God, I was able to build new relationships. It’s hard to believe I’m claiming the Midwest as...

...in Chicago, to Joseph and Lucy Paoletti Picucci. She had two siblings, a sister Josephine, (who is joining us on livestream) and a brother Peter, who is deceased. Her sister Josie says that Loretta was born six weeks early, so started life off rather frail and thin. While Peter and Josie would be engaged in lively play together, Loretta was happy to pursue her love of reading and study from an early age. She had been attracted to religious life...

Simply put, being a Sister of Providence means a million different things because life is made up of a million (at least) different aspects! One of the best ways to describe what it means today is for me to look at our Constitutions: the guide for our way of life. Two of my favorite sections are those on the “Mission of the Congregation” and the “Call to Community”. The Sisters of Providence attended the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR)...

...affirming to my journey. Most notably I was reminded of many examples of how Providence guided my choices, even when, in the moment, I had no recognition of this divine energy playing a role in guiding me to where I am called to be. My journey is really two-fold, a dual vocation in medicine and religious life. And while I discerned both these vocations, simultaneously, my journey really does start with my parents. Both chose life-long careers in medicine. My...

In early 1960, the Sisters of Providence Vocations Office used the pamphlet, The Story of You …, to encourage young women to discern religious life, in particular, religious life with the Sisters of Providence. The pamphlet was addressed to “YOU — Miss Average American Girl.” On the cover is Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College sophomore Marilyn Marschall. The portrait appeared in the 1955 Les Bois, the college yearbook. Marilyn, who is now known as Marilyn Antonik, entered the Congregation in 1955 and...

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin The only surviving sibling of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin was her sister, Marie Guerin-Le Touzé. Three of her daughters entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir, France, and came to the United States to serve at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Only one of the women remained in the Congregation. M. Therese (born Feb. 9, 1827) entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir, France, in 1846 and received the religious name of Sister Mary Theodore. She came to Indiana...

...the challenge of that very stance in the gap of nuance — perhaps especially in our polarized political and religious climate. Yes! As I say “Yes!” to these great unknowns, I am excited to see the ways that Providence will draw these vows into my life. I’m excited to see the way they will shape me into my most authentic self. I’m excited to see what religious life will come to be as we navigate this time of transition. I’m...

Note: The following statement was crafted by several national faith organizations. The Leadership Council of Women Religious (LCWR), of which the Congregation is a member, also joined in sharing their dismay as the United States formally exited from the Paris Climate Agreement. As religious organizations representing a diversity of faith traditions we profoundly regret that today the United States formally exits the Paris Agreement on climate change, the world’s best framework for action to address the climate crisis. Global climate...

...at age 17, being a religious sister was the only way a woman could dedicate herself to service in the Church. I felt called to give the best that I could to God. Religious life seemed to be the answer for me,” she said. The bond has grown stronger with time. “Community provided for me the intellectual and spiritual training for the foundation of my life of love, mercy and justice. I have had opportunities to expand my horizons and...

...a terrible experience in many ways, and yet it was also a wonderful experience in the faith community. It was the first time God had my whole attention,” she said. Asking the right question During the next few years, Barbara was asked about her interest in religious life. Sister of Providence Marie Wolf once asked her directly about the possibility. “Honestly, I could say no, I never had thought about it. It was not even in my realm of possibility.”...

...three children and the only girl, I felt from the beginning that I had to stand and defend myself. I think this became one of my character traits. Sister Marilu Covani At grammar school with the religious of “La Santa Union de los Sagrados Corazones,” I learned about and found my God, a benign and loving force who has been my Savior, companion and guiding light. Possible Call As a teenager and young woman, I began to study medicine. I...
