Our history

We're rooted for tomorrow.

Since 1840, more than 5,200 women have entered our Congregation. We are Roman Catholic sisters who minister in 17 states, the District of Columbia and Asia. We hope you enjoy and take time to explore!

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

“Cities and provinces disappear like individuals. God alone remains. Let us attach ourselves to (God) with all our hearts and (God) will take care of us …”

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

1798-1856, Foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana

“We continue to focus on the needs of today’s world … to reach out to the imprisoned, the immigration, the marginalized and especially women. That is what many women’s congregations have always done. In our early history, the need was for education, especially of women. Now the focus has broadened … still in education, but education about today’s issues.”
