Food pantry volunteers celebrated
“You are the representatives of Christ within their midst. You are the Providence of God.”
That’s how General Superior Sister Dawn Tomaszewski, SP, greeted the more than 30 volunteers who attended the Providence Food Pantry Volunteer celebration luncheon on Friday, October 17, in the Community Room of Providence Hall.

The volunteers were treated to a luncheon and also learned how their impact on the food pantry helped residents in need within Vigo County. The luncheon was sponsored by the Western Indiana Community Action Agency (WICAA) and AmeriCorps.
‘Without You, There is No Us.’
Food pantry director Sister Maureen Fallon, SP, was the host of the celebration and offered a PowerPoint presentation to those in attendance, explaining what the pantry has accomplished during the past fiscal year.
“Without you, there is no us,” Sister Maureen said. “You have contributed 15,504 volunteer hours this year. Together, we served 7,000 families, 27,018 individuals and distributed enough food for some 620,320 meals!”

She explained that the volunteers consist of Providence Associates, teenagers and students from West Vigo High School, Sisters of Providence, individuals through the Vigo County Child and Adult Resources Services (CARS) Program, college students, representatives from the Vigo County Community Corrections Program and others.
Sister Maureen added since the inception of the food pantry, on September 8, 1994, more than 108,000 families have been served, which includes 377,022 individuals.
“And we have provided food to our families so they can prepare some 14 million meals,” Sister Maureen said. “What a mission! Thank you! This mission would not be possible without each of you! We’re blessed to have you.”

A Ministry of Hospitality
“I am grateful to Sister Maureen and how she has really made this thank you an annual event,” Sister Dawn said during her welcoming. “I think this is important. This is more than food. Really, it’s a ministry of hospitality.
“Food insecurity is the problem. And community is the answer. Just keep showing up, OK?”
Note: The following prayer was written by General Councilor Sister Anne Therese Falkenstein, SP, for the luncheon.

You have blessed us, Oh God, with a bounty of food, friends and family. We are thankful for this meal we are about to enjoy, the people who prepared it, and with whom we will share it. Grant us and those we serve, we pray, perseverance, good health, and a joyful spirit so that we may always be eager to help others in need.
Amen.
