A look at the fountain
Did you know the fountain in front of Providence Spirituality & Conference Center wasn’t always there?
Neither did I, but thanks to the sisters in Archives, I learned some of the history of the fountain.
Now you can too!
Prior to 1913, the fountain did not exist, as you can see by this photo.
However, photographic evidence shows that by 1914, there was a fountain.
The sisters in Archives found information regarding the fountain and its origins, learning that per community diary entries, there was no fountain in front of Foley Hall – which was known as Central Hall at that time.
But photos from 1915 show a fountain in place. A much smaller fountain, however, which can be seen in this photo.
Further diary entries state that artist Sister Mary Emmanuel Rinke designed a new fountain to be placed in front of Foley Hall. In addition, a May 31, 1930, community diary entry says “the new fountain in front of the Academy was in action for the first time that afternoon.”
That fountain has since been painted many times, and more landscaping has taken place around the area.

Photo of fountain reminds me to ask if you have a current map or diagram of the property? So many changes, which I do not decry, prompt me to ask. While I am at it, do you have good SMTG quote about education/teaching? Thanks, Carol
