...Saint Mary-of-the-Woods still live out the legacy and carry on the spirit of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin shown here. The most obvious way is through the sisters’ ministry at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, which connects people in our harried society back to nature, back to our most basic and our spiritual roots. The spiritual connections Saint Mother Theodore found in working and walking these grounds also remind me of the contemplative connections still being made today by interns at...

Gift Giving. There are people who have a real talent for it, who treat it like an art form. For years, I have had the privilege of hearing some incredible gift-giving stories through the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, Adopt an Alpaca program at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice. Birthdays, anniversaries, adoptions to honor the memory of someone, and of course our most popular, holiday adoptions. Daniel Chang and his wife, Tracy Weyand, meet their adopted alpaca Andre,...

When much of the world went into lockdown this past year, we saw countless stories of how changes in our behavior can positively impact our world for the better. With this in mind, the team at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, wanted to find ways to still...

...Center for Eco-Justice. “God always gets us where we’re supposed to be,” he said, quoting a letter Sister Marianne Ridgell sent him when he was applying for the internship. Ezra’s journey with the Sisters of Providence started when he was 21, shortly after his father’s death. He received a notice that his father had been enrolled in the Blessed Sacrament Association, a ministry of prayer offered by the Sisters of Providence. He had no idea what this was and had...

...urgency about presenting our statement, the Providence Climate Agreement, for it is a crucial step in the Congregation’s journey towards environmental justice. We knew saying and signing the agreement together would be the “big finish,” yet we needed a “grand beginning,” too. And, when our co-chair Sister Mary Lou Dolan, CSJ, suggested writing a Manifesto, we knew we had it. Meaningful writing rarely comes quickly – nevertheless the Congregation’s Litany of Non-Violence provided ideal (if distressing) words and phrases with...

...Healing Touch “I felt like singing! There was something very heavy on my heart and now I no longer feel like crying,” said a woman who had experienced Mary’s ministry of healing touch … a therapy that releases blocked energy. After witnessing Mary’s first session in a small quiet corner of the dining room, people awaited their turn for this prayerful, healing experience. All expressed gratitude. Many experienced peace and felt more relaxed, some shed a tear or tears –...
...Our sisters were handcuffed and later shackled. This certainly seems like an excessive use of force against women religious who have dedicated their lives to doing God’s work and to striving for peace in our society.” The Sisters of Providence have participated in the annual non-violent protest for several years. About 20 members of the Congregation made the trip to Georgia this year. Several Sisters of Providence have traveled to Nicaragua, Colombia, Haiti and Guatemala where they have learned about...
