Sister Maureen grew up in a Catholic family in Chicago where the Sisters of Providence educated her for 16 years. She said she first considered becoming a woman religious in elementary school. During her years in college, she revisited the idea when Sister Margaret Sullivan, her physics teacher, declared that she would eventually be a sister.
