Sister Annette Marie Bruce “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone.” (Philippians 4:4-5) “This reading from Philippians seems to describe Sister Annette Marie. The first words that come to mind when I hear her name are peace and joy. Sister Annette Marie said that her favorite place at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods was the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Saint Mother Theodore’s feast day

Published on October 3, 2013

…one of our sisters from the Boston area says, “I have to get my pocketbook.” “Pocketbook.” What a funny word. Come to think of it, though, “purse” is a funny word as well. You may think this a trivial point to focus on but Jesus is clear in his instructions to his companions – they are to provide themselves with “purses that do not grow old.” Once I got onto this purse theme in my prayer, I remembered a story…

For Those Who Have Mothered Us

for those women who have taught us That we will not always be successful … and that sometimes our greatest learnings Are from our apparent failures. We celebrate those women who encouraged and challenged us to be risk takers: Those who were unwilling to compromise the vision entrusted to them Who taught us not only by word, but also by example, what it means To be a woman of love, mercy, and justice Those who have shown us how to…

Published on November 2, 2023

…Read editorials, op-ed pieces. Listen to eyewitness accounts. Make a whole-hearted effort to learn about both sides, all sides of the story. For example, scout out reliable resources that present the Palestinian perspective and the Israeli perspective on issues sparking the current violence in that part of our common home. We do know there’s little truth in he/she/they started it. It takes two to tango. (or tangle). Bottom line? Jesus gives us this message again and again in so many…
