Overnight Security Guard

We are seeking a vigilant, dependable part-time, unarmed security guard to join our team for weekend overnight shifts (three 8-hour shifts). While the rest of the world sleeps, you will be the guardian of a historic, peaceful community. This isn’t just a job watching empty hallways—it is a vital mission to ensure the safety, dignity, and peace of mind for the Sisters of Providence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the Security Manager, you will maintain a safe and secure environment by performing the following duties:

  • Campus Patrols: Walk and monitor buildings, grounds, perimeters, and off-campus residences to ensure the security of residents and students while watching for fire and safety hazards.
  • Emergency Response: Respond effectively to fire or security issues and assist in coordinating local emergency services when called.
  • Reporting & Logging: Prepare detailed, accurate written logs of nightly activities and draft formal reports regarding accidents, safety hazards, or security breaches.
  • Community Assistance: Enforce campus rules, speed limits, and parking regulations firmly and courteously. Lock doors, manage lighting, and provide aid to residents, staff, and visitors when requested.
  • Facilities Support: Monitor fire protection systems, report equipment malfunctions, and perform occasional light grounds maintenance (such as spreading salt or shoveling snow during winter weather).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous security, military, or law enforcement experience is helpful but not required.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for log writing and interacting with a diverse community.
  • Composure: Ability to remain calm, adaptive, and effective during stressful emergency situations or encounters with uncooperative individuals.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work cooperatively within a small, closely-knit department and align with the core philosophy and values of the institution.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This role operates on a collegiate campus and retirement community grounds. Candidates must meet the following physical requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb up to four flights of stairs, bend, and stoop.
  • Sufficient strength to assist, an average-sized adult down four flights of stairs in an emergency.
  • Hearing and eyesight within normal ranges (after correction).
  • Note: The role involves potential exposure to stressful emergency conditions, confrontation, or communicable diseases/bodily fluids common to healthcare and residential environments.
