Journey to a Saint: Walking Pilgrimage

Walking-Pilgrimage

Several pilgrims will travel the more than 80-mile jaunt from Indianapolis to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods beginning on Tuesday, June 7.

By foot.

The group will be led by Jim Recasner and Monica Robinson. They plan to arrive at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, June 11.

Recasner came up with the idea not long ago during a dinner engagement with friends from other parishes in the Indianapolis area. During the dinner, a person who had traveled to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on a tour described the beauty of The Woods.

“We would like for this to become an annual pilgrimage,” Recasner said, “in the future, not only a spiritual and physical journey, but also a benefit to the Sisters of Providence.”

This is the first walking pilgrimage to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods that the group has undertaken.

“This will be kind of a learning experience for us,” Recasner said. “We’re looking forward to it. We’re calling it ‘The Trailblazer.’”

The Sisters of Providence provided the group with copies of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin’s “Journals and Letters” to read prior to making the journey and to study as they travel to The Woods. During the trip, the group will also watch a film on Saint Mother Theodore Guerin.

The trip will begin on Tuesday, June 7, as the group pass through the Holy Door of Mercy at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, Indianapolis. After attending mass with reconciliation available, the group will stay with the Knights of Columbus Mater Dei Council.

On Wednesday, June 8, the group will attend morning Mass at St. Susanna, in Plainfield, before walking to Mount Meridian, located in Putnam County. They will then stay overnight at St. Paul the Apostle Church, in Greencastle.

On Thursday, June 9, the group will continue their pilgrimage to Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, in Brazil, for an overnight stay, before walking to St. Patrick Church, in Terre Haute, on Friday, June 10. They will stay at St. Patrick Church before concluding their pilgrimage at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, June 11.

The group will begin their journey at the arrival rock at The Woods before passing by the log cabin. They will then enter Providence Hall.

Their journey will conclude on Sunday, June 12, after they attend Mass and stay for Brunch in the O’Shaughnessy Dining Room.
