Biography
Sister Mary, formerly Sister Mary Agatha, was born Florence Carlton on June 6, 1926. She died on Feb. 22, 2007. She was 81 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 59 years.
Sister Mary entered the Congregation on Feb. 11, 1948. She professed first and final vows on Aug. 15, 1950 and 1955, respectively.
She began ministering in grade schools in 1950 in Evansville, Ind. She also taught at other schools in Indiana, as well as California and Illinois, including time as principal at St. Agnes in Chicago. In the 1970s, she began ministering as a pastoral associate at St. Gall Parish in Chicago, but in 1980, she returned to education as principal at Holy Angels School, Sturgis, Mich. She also ministered as a teacher in Massachusetts before coming back to Indiana to minister with Goodwill Industries and then helping as a volunteer at Saint Ann Clinic in Terre Haute.
While at Saint Ann Clinic, Sister Mary helped interview volunteers and supervise their orientation.
