Biography
Sister Martha Steidl, formerly Sister Marie Aquinas, was born Martha Ann on April 26, 1925. She died on March 12, 2018. She was 92 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 72 years.
Sister Martha entered the Congregation in 1945. She professed first vows in 1948 and final vows in 1953.
She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in music education, and also earned a master’s degree in music from Catholic University of America.
Sister Martha taught music in schools in Illinois, Indiana, and Washington D.C., for 25 years, before joining the music faculty at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1973. She served 30 years at the college as an instructor, assistant, associate and full professor. After retiring in 2001, she continued ministry for 10 years in the school’s distance education program.
She was also known as a superb cook and an excellent seamstress.
