Biography

Sister Dorothy, formerly Sister Damien, was born Dorothy Helen Deal on July 3, 1919. She died on Jan. 2, 2011. She was 91 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 74 years.

Sister Dorothy entered the Congregation on Jan. 9, 1937. She professed first and final vows on Aug. 15, 1939 and 1945, respectively.

Sister Dorothy’s first teaching ministry was at St. Charles, Peru, Ind., in 1939. She ministered as a teacher or principal at many other schools in Indiana, as well as ministering in education in schools in Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. She also ministered as a reading specialist in Chicago and from 1979 to 1986, Sister Dorothy ministered as coordinator of facilities at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She returned to the Woods in 1990.

Sister Dorothy is remembered as being a perfectionist.
