Fair Trade is an approach to business and trade that is based on a commitment to cherish and uphold the sacredness and dignity of every person.
Fair Trade products ensure that farmers and workers in developing countries receive a price that is fair for their products.
This Fair Trade price offers the farmers the means needed to support their families and grow their business.
“Our faith calls us to live out our Gospel values on a daily basis. The Catholic social teaching principles of respecting the dignity of work and caring for the poor are key ways in which we can do this. Through fair trade, we can use our economic power to contribute to the common good and live out these values.” – Catholic Relief Services
Fair Trade Items in Linden Leaf Gifts
To promote economic justice, the Sisters of Providence have expanded the number of Fair Trade items in our gift shop.
Some of our Fair Trade products come from UPAVIM (Unidas Para Vivir Mejor).
UPAVIM is a cooperative of approximately 80 women who live in a marginalized community on the outskirts of Guatemala City. The women in the organization are all mothers and homemakers, some widows, and some abandoned.
Many are the sole providers of economic support for their families.
The mission of UPAVIM is to empower the women in the community. They strive to do this by improving the quality of life for themselves, their families and the whole community through access to UPAVIM’s programs.
These included education and employment opportunities, health and child care services, and personal and professional developmental programs.
