“My favorite part of being a Providence Associate is coming to the Woods for events open to associates, and sometimes, when I can, coming for Mass. I enjoy being among like-minded people to whom you do not have to explain a pursuit of life in the Spirit,” Providence Associate Joanna Dailey says.

“Take My Hand,” a retreat for Providence Associates, based on the writings of Saint Mother Theodore, was a special retreat. It reached into the story of Mother Theodore and brought it forward to our lives in the present, shares Joanna Dailey of the March 2014 Providence Associate retreat at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Mother Theodore and her companions endured dark, cramped quarters, rough waters and storms on their journey from France to America. The new permanent shrine to Saint Mother Theodore will have a replica of the small space that she lived in during her travels aboard the “Cincinnati.”

Standing here at this used clothing exchange rack, it all suddenly makes sense. THIS is how it happened. A group of sisters in the United States in the 1960s looks down at what they are wearing and ask, why are we wearing this? Oh, yeah, it’s because we’ve been passing these clothes around for years and years and years.

The Sisters of Providence have a long history of mission work in Jasper, Ind. This week marked the 172nd year the school has been in operation. St. Joseph school located in Jasper, Ind., was the first establishment of the Sisters of Providence outside of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence will be blessed in its new location at 4:30 p.m., April 6.
