So, in honor of National Catholic Sisters week, join us for a meal. Get to know us better. Tell others about the Sisters of Providence and the work we do to make the world a more just and loving place. Together with you, our friends and supporters, we can make this world a more hope-filled place.

All her life, Sister Editha Ben has been a risk taker, working to break boundaries in her own life and in society. From running away to join the convent, to being blacklisted by the Filipino government for teaching social justice, to transferring to the Sisters of Providence after more than 30 years in her former congregation, Sister Editha has proven herself willing to follow the Spirit’s lead even in the face of opposition.

‘She possessed that wonderful gift of interest’

As a convert, I had grown to cherish Mary despite my initial unfamiliarity with her veneration. But “Providence” in particular was not a vocabulary word I would have associated with Mary. Upon reflection, I believe this is due to my Protestant background. I was only familiar with the Calvinist-influenced understanding of “Providence” as fate, predestination … a rigid notion vastly removed from Mary’s love for all people.

I read somewhere that when Venus — the morning star — first appears, the atmosphere breaks its light into many different colors, like a rainbow. The glory of God is like that —it embraces all of the beautiful rainbow colors of humanity and creation, and we, as God’s people, as lovers of Jesus, celebrate this rainbow of light.

We have to be brave and we have to be vigilant, and shine this Christ-light into the darkness and share our hope with each other and all who fear or despair.
