Biography

Sister Paul Marie was born Gertrude Gutgsell on Oct. 23, 1917. She died on Oct. 31, 2005. She was 87 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 69 years.

Sister Paul Marie entered the Congregation on Feb. 10, 1936. She professed first and final vows on Aug. 15, 1938 and 1944, respectively.

Initially, Sister Paul Marie traveled to the East Cost to minister in education in Maryland. She also taught in classrooms in Massachusetts before returning to the Midwest to teach at St. Mel, Chicago. While teaching in other schools in Illinois, Sister Paul Marie also ministered at schools in Indiana. In 1984, she eventually became a pastoral associate, ministering at St. Joseph Parish, Evansville, Ind., and from 1989 to 1993, she was the pastoral associate for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Village Parish. She retired in 1993, but continued to offer services at the Motherhouse.

Upon retirement, Sister Paul Marie ministered as an aide in health care at the Motherhouse.
