Biography

Sister Nancy, formerly Sister Ann Carita, is a native of Indianapolis. She graduated from Saint Agnes Academy in June 1960, and entered the Congregation on September 12, 1960.

“I was the first group to enter the new Novitiate, which became Owens Hall,” Sister Nancy said. “The novices had already moved across the road, but ours was the first group to come directly into that building once it was built.”

Sister Nancy professed first vows on August 15, 1963, and final vows on August 15, 1968.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in German. She received the National Science Foundation grant to obtain a master’s in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. Sister Nancy also spent two summers in the program and was awarded a graduate assistantship for a year in order to complete her master’s.

In 1981, she began studies for a Canon Law degree at the Catholic University of America.

Sister Nancy has ministered as a math teacher, most notably at Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, Indiana, from 1971 to 1978. She also ministered as a Judge and Defender of the Bond, Tribunal, for the Diocese of Evansville, Indiana, and the Director, Judge, Defender of the Bond, for the Archdiocese of San Francisco, California, from 1987 to 2001.

In 2001, she became a member of the Congregation’s Leadership Team and stayed there until 2011. She also ministered as the Congregation’s treasurer from 2001 to 2013. Currently, she is ministers as a Canonical Consultant/Prioress of Carmelite Monastery in Louisville, Ky.

Sister Nancy said she enjoys attending women’s basketball games and officiated high school and college games from 1971 to 1981. She was also a junior swimming champion before entering the Congregation.
