Biography
Sister Mary Ann Leahy, formerly Sister Marie Anita, was a Sister of Providence for 67 years. She was 84 years old when she passed away on April 30, 2019.
Born in Chicago, Sister Mary Ann entered the Congregation in January 1952, from Our Lady of Sorrows, Chicago, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1959.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and also has a master’s degree in science from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a master’s degree in biology from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota. Sister Mary Ann also received a MBA in business administration from Dominican University in Illinois.
She ministered as a teacher at many locations, including ministering as principal at St. Jerome School in Chicago from 1973-79.
Sister Mary Ann also ministered as the Director of the National Religious Retirement Office through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The office coordinates fundraising for the retirement of members of all religious congregations.
