Biography
Sister Mary Hickey, formerly Sister Mary Ephrem, was born on July 28, 1909. She died on Jan. 12, 2006. She was 96 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 78 years.
Sister Mary entered the Congregation on June 7, 1927. She professed first vows on Dec. 8, 1929, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1935.
Her first teaching ministry was in 1930 at St. Augustine, Fort Wayne, Ind. Sister Mary also taught in other schools in Indiana, as well as Illinois. In 1979, she began ministry at Simeon House, a ministry to the elderly in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1993, she retired, but continued to minister in the Phone Room at Owens Hall and later in Health Care Service.
Sister Mary had six relatives who were Sisters of Providence, including her great-great-aunt, Mother Anastasie Brown, the Congregation General Superior from 1868-1874.
