Sister Joanna Brown

Biography

Sister Joanna Brown, formerly Sister Louise Marie, was born on Sept. 29, 1928. She died on Sept. 19, 2014. She was 85 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 68 years.

Sister Joanna entered the Congregation on July 22, 1946. She professed first and final vows on Jan. 23, 1949 and 1954, respectively.

Sister Joanna ministered in education for 50 years in schools in Indiana and Illinois. She also ministered for 22 years at Precious Blood, Jasper, Ind., as a teacher, principal, confirmation coordinator and volunteer. In 1995, she was honored as diocesan “Teacher of the Year.” She returned to the Woods in 2006 but continued to minister at The Helping Hands and Providence Food Pantry.

It was said that one of her favorite songs was Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
