Biography
Sister Helen, formerly Sister Alma Francis, was born Helen McCarthy on Feb. 3, 1915. She died on June 23, 2005. She was 90 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 72 years.
Sister Helen entered the Congregation on Aug. 20, 1932. She professed first vows on Jan. 23, 1935, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1940.
Her teaching ministry began in 1935 at St. Angela, Chicago. She taught in other classrooms in Illinois as well as schools in Indiana and Washington, D.C. While ministering at St. Francis Xavier, she served as assistant principal. She retired in 1985 but continued ministering as an aide or tutor at several grade schools for 13 more years.
As a youngster, Sister Helen enjoyed playing baseball and she loved watching the Chicago Cubs.
