Biography
Sister Gertrude Eileen was born Mary Helen Getrey on Sept. 7, 1908. She died on Oct. 2, 2010. She was 102 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 85 years.
Sister Gertrude Eileen entered the Congregation on June 5, 1925. She professed first and final vows on Dec. 8, 1927 and 1932, respectively.
She began her teaching ministry in 1927 at St. Angela, Chicago. She ministered in many other schools in Illinois, as well as schools in Indiana and Massachusetts. From 1978 to 1984, Sister Gertrude Eileen ministered as a tutor at Gibault School in Terre Haute, Ind.
During her lifetime, there were 18 United States Presidents, 10 popes and 11 general superiors of the Sisters of Providence.
