Biography
Sister Bernadette Mary was born Julia May in December 1922. She died on September 22, 2017. She was 94 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 78 years.
Sister Bernadette Mary entered the juniorate of the Sisters of Providence in Marywood, Anaheim, California, after her freshman year. She entered the Congregation in 1939. Her first visit to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods was in 1946.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree in education from Indiana State University.
She ministered as a teacher for 28 years in schools in Indiana and California. Her first teaching ministry took place in 1941 at St. Elizabeth, Van Nuys, California. She was also a member of the sisters’ General Council for five years before beginning a ministry as a retreat hostess for Marywood Center in the Diocese of Orange, California. She returned to the Motherhouse in 2012.
Sister Bernadette Mary received the Ecclesiastical Honors from Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.
