Prayer on the death of a pet

Oh, Maker of All that Is,
see my sorrow.
My beloved pet has died.

This creature that you formed
of fur, fins, feathers — of loyal heart
and playful limb — is no more, and
my heart aches with the loss.

There will never be another like them,
not in all of creation.

I turn to you for comfort, for the sure knowing
that my pet is with you forever and that
some far-off day, we will be reunited.
Until then, hold my pet close,
soothe my tears and grant me strength
to recall that love itself can never die.
Let my grief grow less with each new day.
Amen.
